Earth Day: Technology best practices for a healthy environment

Earth Day

When the PC was first released in 1990, the world looked a bit different. As technology continues to evolve, so does carbon footprint. Technology companies such as Microsoft have pledged to be carbon-negative by 2030. Now more than ever, it is important to be conscious of daily practices that can impact the environment.

So, what can we do about it? In honor of Earth Day, here are five ways your employees and your business can operate in a sustainable way:

Power

1) Log-off or Restart your computer periodically
Many employees let their computers go to sleep after a long day of work. However, it is best practice to log off every night, restart once a week, and shut down once a month. Not only does this keep your device operating at high speed, but it also allows critical updates to occur, and it decreases emissions for the environment.

2) Recycle your batteries, old equipment, and chords
Did you know, electronic waste (e-waste) makes up 70% of the world’s toxic waste? To combat toxic waste pile-up, many companies accept e-waste for recycling. Consider recycling your e-waste to keep it out of landfills.

Remote work

3) Provide remote working options
Empowering your employees to work from home not only increases productivity, but it also reduces carbon emissions due to transportation required to get to the office. Ensure your employees have all the necessary tools they need to get work done from home.

Equipment

4) Reuse equipment
As employees transfer to new roles, or new hires are added to your team, consider repurposing old computers and equipment. Configuring an old device for new users helps to cut costs and cut carbon.

5) Quit out of applications
Finished with Word, Internet, Adobe, or another application for a while? Exit your apps fully. This will eliminate unnecessary energy used by your computer. Though a small task, the impact is great. A computer emits an average of 200 watts per hour. Quitting out of programs can conserve energy and reduce environmental impact.
